A

A different sort of role for Kate Winslet -a gritty , no nonsense cop. This offering is low key and almost too true to life. She is a divorcee with a lot on her mind, as her ex plans another wedding. And then a dead body shows up to complicate matters. And yet she has some budding romantic interest. And past disappearances that have yet to be solved. What’s next?

Land Saturday, Apr 10 2021

An outstanding directorial and acting effort by Robin Wright. A big change in role from the First Lady in House of Cards. After a personal tragedy , a middle aged woman decides to purchase a cabin in the wilderness. She finds she is not really prepared for the demands of dealing with animals ( a bear who interrupts a trip to the outdoor privy) and the loneliness and privations of winter which is longer in the mountains. During the winter she is rescued by a man well versed in survival in the mountains. He brings a nurse in to help her regain her strength. But this really isn’t about romance. They have similar tragedies to deal with. It is a truly sincere and deep friendship that heals both of them. I really recommend this film.

Condor Tuesday, Mar 23 2021

Another series that successfully reconfigures the work in the movie – past. In this case “Six Days of the Condor”. Max Irons is engaging as the lead – He has good genes in his favor. William Hurt adds a touch of class as well as other veteran actors. Good writing, great pace. Action adventure fans – rejoice!

Clarice Saturday, Feb 13 2021

Wisely the individuals behind this project chose to stick with a lot of the creative decisions that made the film “Silence of the Lambs” such a critical success. The tone of this new program carries on where the film leaves off. The lead actress also seems to have gleaned good information from the movie. This is the best new offering that I have seen so far on network television.

the little things Sunday, Jan 31 2021

I don’t remember a time when Denzel Washington has given a bad performance. This portrayal of a California cop is one of his best. It is deep and subtle. Well written and directed film also. There are no definitive answers as to whom the serial killer is at the end of the film – but I suspect that happens in real life. The seedy underside of Los Angeles is in full view.

Promising Young Woman Thursday, Jan 21 2021

This is a tour de force for Carey Mulligan. Indeed she plays a promising young woman. In fact she is so in character she was hard to recognize at times. There is Oscar buzz about her performance and it is well deserved. The “Me too” movement should be pleased. A spotlight is being aimed at the mistreatment of young women by immature young men – or men of any age. I won’t spoil it, the ending is unusual and surprising.

Pieces of a Woman Saturday, Jan 9 2021

A gripping film with a redemptive ending. If you’re pregnant , I’d maybe pass this up. As careful as “Call the Midwife” in portraying childbirth accurately; it seemed even more immediate and painful before and after the birth. The female lead is very very good and is paired with Shia Lebeouf- who shows us more than once that men can cry. I would say it is a woman’s film. My husband said it was painful to watch.

Bridgerton Thursday, Dec 31 2020

Well, this show is very popular, and I do enjoy watching it, but I am an adult. It’s to say the least, pretty racy. Well written and acted though. The dialogue is sprightly and the characters are very well drawn. At one time I wanted to be an actress – I’m kind of glad I didn’t pursue that – it seems that very revealing and embarrassing moments involving intercourse are the name of the game these days. Shakespeare wasn’t this roudy. The humor -especially Lady Whistledown’s gossip rag , (played skillfully by Julie Andrews) is well done. Have the kids watch cartoons in another room.
