This series is most entertaining and original. The main character is quite something – she is autistic and very high functioning. She is in fact often brilliant. And when she is inspired she is most forceful. Normally I am not a fan of cute – but in this case I make an exception. She is played by a very talented actress and supported by good direction and writing .

This is an exceptional film. Well, I’ll start by saying I would have a lot of trouble being a Hasidic Jew.

Too many rules – many of which make little sense – an absolutely male oriented society – no feminists allowed. We follow a young newly married pregnant girl with a deep love of music who runs away from all she knows to see what lies ahead for her out of her element. I must say I as a lapsed Catholic, at the age of 18, wouldn’t have had the courage she has shown in this quest for self-actualization.

This series has won a lot of well – deserved awards. The lead actress is deeply talented..

Jeremy Allen White shines as the principal character in this behind the scenes view of the frenetic life of a restauranteur in Chicago. After his brother’s demise – he inherits said restaurant with all its troubles. The pace of this show is right on. People are working very intensely and at a fast clip. I’ve admired Mr. White’s work in Shameless and I’m not disappointed here. He has a look about him that reminds me of a young Robert Mitchum. Don’t miss this. It’s only 30 minutes and I wish it were longer.

the Time Travelers Wife Tuesday, May 17 2022

This is one of the best new offerings this season, if not the best. 2 very engaging characters interact in space and time – nude and clothed – with some very jaunty dialogue. It’s a breath of fresh air. There’s so much murder and mayhem on the tube this is a great respite. And I must say the nudity is handled very tastefully showing just so much of Mr. Theo James’s physique as modesty would allow. I hope that the powers that be can keep the humor and good times rolling. Can’t wait for the next instalment!

Under the Banner of Heaven Saturday, May 7 2022

Andrew Garfield is excellent as an LDS cop. His sidekick is a native American non-believer who tends to add some outsider thoughts to what is going on in this Utah community. A young Mormon girl from Idaho becomes engaged to a fellow who is in a rather strict Latter Day Saints family in Utah. She comes off as more level – headed than the rest of the family she is marrying into. She seeks to work for a local television station. There are a number of males in this family attracted to this newcomer. Well there is a double murder and our cop duo try to solve this.

It seems like everything is a cop drama these days, but I must say this one kept me riveted.

My philosophy Friday, Dec 17 2021

AA

Question- What makes her think she can write film reviews?? A pretty long time ago I was a theatre major at the University of Minnesota. and managed to graduate Magna Cum Laude. I took course work in acting, directing , scene design, tv acting, and visual arts. I had an English minor. I guess if I had to do it again I would have worked to get a masters of fine arts in theatre and minor in studio art. I also would have taken more acting and directing classes. In Minneapolis I designed sets for a redesigned bicycle shop- little theater – the Typist and the Tiger; Fortune and Men’s Eyes, and Loot. There was a lot of painting of walls on the set – small as the stage was. The theatre was called The Cricket Theatre.

If there’s one thing I know – I am versed in theatre history- thanks to Dr. Arthur Ballet- and his Theater Backgrounds class – a class for graduate students. My moniker for this class was Ballet’s Read ‘Em Quick- starting with the Greeks and ending with the present day. 5 plays had to be read every week and a quick analysis handed in every week. I was still an undergrad. Graduate students had more time for that.

Other professors of note – H Wesley Balk for Direction-Wendel Josal for Scene Design.

As you can probably tell – these memories are precious to me.

I haven’t done much in theatre in recent years, but I have explored graphic design and glass bead making and jewelry design.

My criteria for what I will review is:

1.The film/series must move me.

2.The film/series must have characters that involve me and grow.

3. The film/series must have a compelling story.

4. The film/series has interesting dialogue.

These are personal criteria.

Belfast Wednesday, Dec 8 2021

.

Kenneth Branagh is a brilliant director. And as I’ve said before, he’s a welcome visitor in my teepee. (Old Ladies Joke). He has done so much – acting, directing, Shakespeare that communicates. Evidentally he appears to have grown up in Belfast , Northern Ireland in the time of the “Troubles”. But this is not all violence and gore. There is definitely some of that. .But there is plenty of comic relief. It comes across as real life. Judi Dench is incredibly good as Grandma. And Grandpa was also very warmly portrayed.

And I must say I love the Irish brogue – wee this and wee that. Isn’t anything large? Well I was hugely entertained – it’s in black and white but it didn’t seem to be wrong. See it!

The young actor who portrays him growing up is also brilliant. This movie just rings true. Even in the worst of times there are times of relief with humor and high jinks.
