Here’s a film I can truly endorse. It’s sort of like Derzu Usala by Kurasawa (showing indigenous peoples) and Call the Midwife re: the subject is pregnancy. It takes place in New Zealand and shows a woman who is part midwife and part witch doctor. The story begins as a young Maori seeks the help of this matronly woman and unfortunately it doesn’t work. Then she is summoned to help another very wealthy lady. This woman is the white liar. The pace is slow , but I wasn’t bored for a minute of it. A very satisfying ending.
